Environmental value creation in the palm oil industry

Location: Departments of Meta, Santander, Cesar, Magdalena and Atlántico

Year: 2014 - 2017

Objective: Strengthen environmental management practices and maximize value generation in the palm oil industry. The program seeks to increase the economic value of palm oil plants’ environmental management practices by implementing strategies to reduce risks, increase the efficiency of their operation and improve their reputation.

Institutions involved: National Federation of Palm Growers (FEDEPALMA), Oil Palm Research Center (CENIPALMA), National Learning Service (SENA).
Results: Creation of a methodology to promote the alignment between environmental management practices and the palm oil industry business core. More than 25 palm oil processing plants received an assessing tool for their environmental strategies integrating indicators in the following areas: compliance with environmental legislation, environmental performance, eco-efficiency and organizational capacity. The company’s environmental self-diagnoses, allowed by the provided tool, guided concrete improvement actions. The experience permitted the creation of a baseline approximation to Colombia’s palm oil industry environmental performance.
